Medieval Bastide village house renovation, Puylaroque, Tarn-et-Garonne
Bastide villages were fortified offering protection to the local paysans, artisans and merchants during the century’s of war, which engulfed France.
I bought the house in a state of ruin having fallen in love with the stunning white limestone; the village of Puylaroque which is perched on an outcrop is totally built in this lovely local stone.
Puylaroque is a commune in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in the Occitanie.
After having decided how I could use the space correctly I had it totally rebuilt by registered and insured French artisans. All major works were completed in 2013, new roof, new beams and on the first level a reinforced concrete floor, double glazed and on street level reflecting glass. From September 2017 all finishing work was completed along with the garden courtyard. The highest specs of insulation, oak windows and doors, ash staircases, phone plugs, TV and an abundance of sockets to give you the choice of creating your proper ambiance. Ground floor: large kitchen, buanderie with WC, storage and H/W tank, 300 ltr. Access to garden and the road.
I had bought a wonderful old workbench that I modified to create the work surface, the island I finished in pressed steel; there are no set rules for design.
First level: salon with French doors leading onto the balcony facing west but profiting from the south sun, here I used the original old fire place and opened up the wall giving access to the balcony, woodturning stove which I placed in the centre of the room, why not? Parental b/room with ensuite shower room, stairs leading to upper level. Here we have two b/rooms plus a large bathroom, (50m2 on each floor.) All radiators reflecting the old cast iron model from former years and towel rails are Acova
The garden which apparently had been the site of another house; the area was covered in a textile to smother any weeds and 15 tons of pebbles were then brought in. Outside lights controlled from the kitchen and plugs/water. There is a large steel double gate leading to the road.
This house is currently for sale.
